English Introduction: New Year’s Day at CrossFit Colosseum isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a declaration of grit. On January 1st, our community gathers once again for our annual Polar Plunge, embracing the cold as a reminder that adversity makes us stronger.
CrossFit Colosseum’s Polar Plunge joins a long global tradition. Around the world, thousands welcome the new year with icy swims—from the legendary Vancouver Polar Bear Swim to the historic Coney Island plunge. Here in Toronto, we’re in good company: Sunnyside Beach hosts its own enthusiastic crowd every January, and the Toronto Polar Bear Dip at Humber Bay Park has raised thousands for charity over the years. Torontonians seem to love starting their year with numb toes and questionable decision-making.
Of course, polar plunges come with their share of hilarious memories. Many long-time participants recall people sprinting into the lake… only to stop dead in shock as the cold hits like “a slap from Mother Nature.” Others have lost shoes to the icy depths, stumbled spectacularly on the way out, or discovered new octaves of screaming they didn’t know they could reach. Every year provides new stories—some heroic, some ridiculous, all unforgettable.
As David Goggins famously says, “If you can get through doing things you hate to do, on the other side is greatness.” A Polar Plunge is exactly that. And his reminder that “You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft that you will die without ever realizing your true potential” sounds like it was written for this very moment.
Cold water immersion lines up perfectly with CrossFit principles: embracing discomfort, developing mental fortitude, and attacking challenges with intensity and community support. The plunge is a physical shock, yes, but even more so a mental proving ground—an opportunity to carry CrossFit’s mindset into the real world.
The heart of this tradition, though, is the CrossFit Colosseum community. We come together, cheer for one another, laugh at the madness of it all, and celebrate the courage it takes to storm into that icy water. And of course, we all love watching our incredible owners, Paul and Irina, lead the way—running in together with the perfect mix of leadership and lunacy. We absolutely adore them for it.
This year is especially meaningful for me, as I’ll be bringing my three daughters for their very first dip together. A family of future warriors in the making.
And for those who survive the plunge?
We’re turning up the heat—literally. Join us back at the gym for a sauna session to thaw out from the epic challenge you’ve conquered.
